Throughout the life of the installation, the number of shedded items pinned to the curtain grows. Upon conclusion the artists ceremonially burn that which was left behind.
Ceremony of Self was born as an interdisciplinary arts project using mask, garment and photography to build young women’s self-confidence, at the age of puberty and transitioning to secondary school. It was first delivered in 2022 during the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, developed in partnership with Moseley Road Baths and ASIRT.
In 2024, it evolved into a monthly workshop series exploring how to integrate ritual, art and community to support women move through the unseen unspoken changes in life.
Resulting from both these versions of the project are a number of bookable ceremonies and resources for you and your community.
The project is led by producer Eleni Kyricou, Josephine Chime, myself, Laura of Curious Rose Photography, community theatre maker Emily Butler, choreographer and dancer Shelley Eva Haden and textile artist and puppet maker Ceridwen Brown.
The following ceremonies can be booked out for festivals, parties or for your community group.

The participants were girls 10-13 years of age with parents subject to immigration control by the Home Office. Given the pressures these girls faced, the increased exposure to messaging objectifying the female body at this age, and the physical and school changes they experienced, we offered them an opportunity to celebrate their super-powers and what they were good at. They translated these strengths into masks and garments which they then cat-walked in a fashion show for friends and family. Their creations were subsequently publicly exhibited for a month.
